Telecollaboration in the Foreign Language Classroom: Intercultural Competences

Alejandro Bolaños García-Escribano is Teaching Fellow at University College London, where he teaches translation at the Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS) and the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. His current research examines the pedagogical potential of cloud-based subtitling platforms for the teaching of audiovisual translation. He also works as a freelance translator and subtitler.
Beatriz Cerezo Merchán is Lecturer of Translation and English Language at the Department of English and German Philology, Universitat de València, Spain. Her current research focuses on audiovisual translation, the didactics of translation, and audiovisual translation as a tool in foreign language acquisition.
ABSTRACT: This paper reports on a recent telecollaboration experience between members of staff and undergraduate students from two European institutions, i.e. University College London, UK, and the Universitat de València, Spain. This project took the form of an international partnership between two lecturers who teach foreign languages and pedagogical translation in English and Spanish, respectively.
The telecollaboration project was divided up in five phases. Every week a percentage of contact hours were devoted to the development of teamwork-based tasks, which students were expected to complete for their international counterparts to read, watch or peer-review.
In total, 91 undergraduate students from UCL and 66 from UV participated in the project. Pairs of UCL teams, comprising of 2–3
